Emergency Radio for Hurricane

January 31, 2009 - Leave a Response

Although now is not a hurricane season but I would like to share my experience of last year Hurricane Ike.  I am quite well prepared by getting the windows board up, stocking up can food and water, flash light, candles, cash and many more that is handy for emergency.  We were out of power for about 24 hours and we lost all communications like everyone else in the neighbourhood.  We were left in the dark without A/C and no communication because phone lines are down and cell phone was not working.  One very important device that we don’t have is the hand crank emergency radio.  We lost touch with the status of hurricane path and all other important announcement.

An emergency radio is, broadly speaking, a radio receiver designed to remain functional in cases of power outage or isolation from contact with civilization. Such radios are often designed to run on minimal or no power sources.  Emergency radios (all but the least expensive) are generally designed to cover more than just the standard AM and FM broadcasting bands; basic shortwave radio coverage (for situations where local radio is out or not available) is common, as well as weather radio in countries that provide that service.  Shortwave radio operates between the frequencies of 3,000 kHz (3 MHz) and 30,000 kHz (30 MHz) and came to be referred to as such in the early days of radio because the wavelengths associated with this frequency range were shorter than the long wave lengths widely in use at that time.

Emergency radio is inexpensive so I would strongly recommend everyone to get one for their emergency prepareness item.  It may look a little old fashion with a crank handle but it will definitely keep you to stay touch with what’s going on around you during the approaching, making land fall and even tornado warning.

Flip Video – Cool Stuff

January 31, 2009 - Leave a Response

When I heard from Emily that recently she bought a flip video and without delay I went to search to know more about the flip video.  Flip Video is a small pocket size camcorder, very easy to operate by just one click on a button.  It is sleek, shareable and totally designable with multiple design and colours.  It operates with internal memory range from 1GB to 4GB and hold 60 mins of recording time.  It built-in with a touch-sensitive capacitive buttons and the size of a mobile phone (2″ W x 4″ H x 1.25″ D).

It works with minimum requirement on

Windows – 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or faster processor, Windows XP SP2 with 512 MB of RAM or Vista with 1 GB of RAM, and USB 2.0 port and of course

Mac too – 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo or faster processor, 1 GB of RAM, OS X Tiger 10.4 or Leopard 10.5, and USB 2.0 port.

I owned a mini DVD Sony Camcorder and it is still fantastic but I find Flip Video is much more unique, small, compact and easy to carry along.

Check it out for yourself and it is cool………

Identity Theft

January 31, 2009 - Leave a Response

Today, we launched an identity theft awareness in our company and your personal information could be obtained easily thru internet, online, old computer and many more explained on the followings.  IT could be very helpful to theft as well.  The hacker will retrieve all your essential information even when they don’t have your computer.  Most of you may or may not already know these problems but let me re-emphasize again the importance of your information in the market place.  Ten simple rules you could follow to protect your identity.

1) Shred Old Documents – Thieves need to grab your personal information, and one easy way to simply search through your garbage.  Old credit card and bank statements and other financial documents are GOLD.  By investing in a cross shredder, you signal to a neighborhood snooper that you’re not worth the trouble.

2) Monitor your credit reports – The first signs of a criminal using your identity is finding strange accounts, lines of credit and enquiries on your credit report you never applied or asked for.  A credit report monitoring service will notify you of any changes made to your credit within a day.

3) Place your birth certificate and SSN in a safety deposit box – There is no need to carry these vital pieces of information with you.  These days, when thieves break into your house, they will often steal more than your jewelry.  They also look for personal information to forge or sell, which is quickly becoming more profitable than your television.

4) Watch where you share your information – Unfortunately, a lot of ID thieves work on the inside, often as retail clerks or employees at a corporation.  Online and offline, keep tabs on where you shop and who you deal with.  If you become a victim, you at least have some idea of where the theft could have occurred.

5) Play it safe on the Internet – The internet is a very convenient way to steal your information.  The thief can be thousands of miles away and only need a computer and some tricks to gain your information.  Fraudulent emails, fake websites and unsecured e-commerce sites are common methods to sneak spyware and tracking software onto your computer to monitor your activity.  Phishing emails, that is emails made to look like official messages from your financial institution, are used to try and lure you into revealing your information.

6) Use smart passwords – Another way to gain your information online is simply attacking legitimate websites you deal with to try and gain logins and passwords.  One such method includes “dictionary attacks” where every possible word in the dictionary is automatically fed into a login screen.  In this case hacker hopes that somebody has used a common word as a password.  To avoid this, use strong passwords with a combination of letters and numbers, and use different passwords for different websites.

7) Retire your old computer securely – Buying a new computer? Use special data cleaning software to wipe your hard drive clean.  Simply throwing documents and records in your electronic trash can does not delete them, only marks them as deleted.  Old hard drives often go for sale on Ebay.  In one study, researchers found that 80% of the hard drives they purchased had financial records and credit card numbers still on them.

8) Don’t advertise your wealth – fold that big screen tv box inside out – The day after Christmas is a feast for thieves.  They can find targets with large bank accounts simply by driving down back lanes and spotting families who recently bought expensive electronics like a big screen television.  Instead, cut down your boxes and fold them inside out to disguise what you bought.

9) Protect your PIN number – Shoulder-surfing is a common way to steal your PIN number.  A stranger in line behind you quickly note the numbers you punch into the ATM or debit machine.  They can simply steal your card and empty your bank account, or manufacture a clone of your card with your correct security information.  Be careful who is behind you and cover the keypad with your other hand while punching in your code.

10) Check your credit card statements – With stolen credit cards so prevalent, check monthly statements carefully.  If you do not recall a certain purchase, pursue it further with your credit card company.  Thieves will often charge small purchases first to “test the waters” to see if you notice and report it.  If not, they will then make larger and bolder purchases until the card is shut down.

DID YOU KNOW…………………………..

  • 26 Jan 2009 is the Chinese New Year? The first day of Chinese Calendar (Lunar Calendar)
  • This year is an Ox year??  Ox year suppose to be a great year but I don’t think the financial people will agree to this.
  • Last year is a Rat year and next year is a Tiger year??
  • There are 12 animals sign in Chinese Astrology.  Each year of the 12-year cycle is named after one of the original 12 animals. Each animal has a different personality and different characteristics. The animal is believed to be the main factor in each person’s life that gives them their traits, success and happiness in their lifetime.
  • The Chinese zodiac refers to a pure calendrical cycle; there are no equivalent constellations like those of the occidental zodiac. In imperial times there were astrologers who watched the sky for heavenly omens that would predict the future of the state, but this was a quite different practice of divination from the popular present-day methods.
  • Chinese refer to the 5 major planets by the names of the elements they were associated with:.
  • Venus—Metal (White Tiger)
  • Jupiter—Wood (Azure Dragon)
  • Mercury—Water (Black Tortoise)
  • Mars—Fire (Vermilion Bird)
  • Saturn—Earth (Yellow Dragon)
  • According to Chinese mysterious astronomy, a person’s destiny can be determined by the position of the major planets at the person’s birth along with the positions of the Sun, Moon and comets and the person’s time of birth and Zodiac Sign.

Photo Synth – Fantastic

January 24, 2009 - Leave a Response

It was great to learn about Photo Synth in the class today.  It is very impressive tools. It has the ability to reconstruct the scene or object from a bunch of flat photographs, and the technology to bring that experience to virtually anyone over the Internet.  A lot of images combined together and you are able to view them 3D.  See for yourself if you haven’t at www.photosynth.net

It examines images for similarities to each other and uses that information to estimate the shape of the subject and the vantage point each photo was taken from.  With this information, they recreate the space and use it as a canvas to display and navigate through the photos.

MIS – Class 7 (Online Medical Data)

January 23, 2009 - Leave a Response

Today, one of our group mates presented a debate on Nationalize Online Medical Record.  In our generation todays, online information is so important in order to maintain efficiency.  I strongly agree to online medical record BUT not Nationalize them.  There are a need for medical record to become available at anytime and at appropriate place.

This information become extremely crucial especially in emergency situation.  If someone collapse and not knowing what medication he/she is taking or any allergy drugs he/she is taking could lead to life threatening.  Therefore, online medical information becoming important in this situation.  Life Saving is the message that we are conveying.

The medical information must be stored in an encrypted database and provides the user with the option of what information goes into the record and who sees that information.  PRIVACY and Security is one of the main concerns to everyone.  This in fact is no difference to banking/financial information available online today.  Double or tripple layer of security is the only way to ensure user satisfaction.

In fact Microsoft had started this process back in 2007 by providing a search engine called HealthVault, a specialized medical search engine to tap into the growing base of consumers who are increasingly turning to the Web to find health information.

New Life

January 19, 2009 - Leave a Response

Happy 2009 New Year Everyone.  I am glad to be alive for 2009.  I had a miserable heart attack 3 days before the New Year.  I was admitted to hospital in Malaysia and Singapore.  Doing nothing but just lying on the bed.  The IT system in hospital is impressive and really cannot imagine if the hospital operate without IT support.  There are hundred and hundred of patients coming in and out daily.  So much information being recorded and stored.

Anyway, this posting is really not to talk about IT or my new life but I must say the IT is also part of my savior.  All things and information are needed almost immediately and the IT system is the only way to make it happen to save thousands of lives.

Life is short and treasure what you have today.

EZ Link – IT Efficiency

January 18, 2009 - Leave a Response

The EZ-Link card is a contactless smart card based on Sony’s FeliCa smartcard technology, used for payments in Singapore especially for transportation (MRT and Busses) in Singapore.

The card is commonly used in Singapore as a smartcard for paying transportation fees in the city-state’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT) and public bus services. The card also serves as a supplementary identification and concession card for students in nationally recognised educational institutes, full-time national service personnel serving in the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Civil Defence Force and Singapore Police Force or senior citizens who are over sixty years old.

The system has since been expanded, with EZ-Link cards being used for payments in Singapore branches of McDonald’s. Some schools in Singapore have also started to adopt the EZ-Link card as a way to mark the attendance of students and to pay for food served within the school campus.

The EZ-Link card operates on a radio frequency (RF) interface of 13.56 MHz at 212 kbit/s, with the potential for communication speeds in excess of 847 kbit/s. It employs the Manchester bit coding scheme for noise tolerance against distance fluctuation between the card and the contactless reader, and implements the Triple DES algorithm for security.

As of Feb 2009, all users are required to change their old EZ Link Card to a new card Contactless ePurse Application (CEPAS) card.  The new card is expanded to all Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) payments, most common convenient stores such as 7-Eleven.  In due time, these cards will be used as one card for all purpose.  I have two of these cards now and can be used whenever I return to Singapore.

Technology changes with IT support make things more efficient so can you imagine the power of IT.

Travel to Singapore on SQ flight

December 8, 2008 - Leave a Response

Still got lots of stuff to do at work and at home.  6 days left before my family and I travel back to Singapore for vacation leave.  It is great to be back at my home town and things change so fast every year we return.  This is our first time travelling on Singapore Airlines on their Houston – Moscow – Singapore route.  We used to travel on Singapore Airlines via LA and Tokyo.

I have requested my friend who is the Head of Revenue Network in Singapore Airlines to find out if he can offer a competitive group discount for our EMBA International Business Trip to Shanghai next year.  This will allow our class mate who has never been to Singapore or travel on Singapore Airlines to experience the difference of the world.  Singapore Airlines is rated as the best airlines and best service in the world.  They have great plane and I am sure they have great IT system.
